Many of the girls have been asking how it went so I am here to officially admit that I tried Paleo for two weeks. Yes, two weeks. Here’s my story:
(Why:) I love Crossfit- but I also love brownies and Coca Cola and everything “processed” in between. – Crossfit has made me strong and fit but I could really afford to shed some more pounds and lean out and that requires proper diet. My diet has dramatically improved since I began CF one year ago but still nothing to brag about! Throughout the past year I realized one thing- the only way you plateau in CF is with diet. If you stop improving, performing, getting stronger, faster etc and you continue to CF regularly, then take a close look at your diet!
(How:) I secretly decided I would try Paleo for two weeks. I started the Monday after Thanksgiving. Waking up with eggs and coffee everyday was fine. Except, I really missed my toast! Now, you might stop reading when I tell you this next thing but I cheated every day. By that I mean, I started every morning with a scoop of creamer and 1 equal in my coffee. Cheater, Cheater! Take it for what it’s worth, this is my story!
I ordered ten items from lifeofrileyfoods.com so that if I needed to cook or couldn’t figure out what to eat and I found myself immediately hungry, then I could zap something in the microwave and be eating in two minutes.
I carried around a list of Paleo foods in my purse: foods to eat all the time, foods to eat in moderation, and foods to not eat at all. I referenced the list but after about three days I knew what was on the list and believe me, brownies never appeared on the list! I got the hang of it pretty easily, no measuring or anything- you can eat as much as you want, all the time- it’s just eating the right foods. The only thing I REALLY wanted all week was a piece of bread…(I didn’t do it though).
By the weekend, Coach Lucas had clearly figured out what I was up to since I kept asking so many questions and he said “When are you going to have a cheat day?” I said “We’ll see after two weeks”.
(Results:) Guess what? I felt great! During the two weeks, I performed two “as prescribed” wods, felt better during workouts than I had in a long time, I lost two pounds, and seriously, my abs leaned out/flattened- it has been 7 years since my last pregnancy and for the first time I saw that the ” baby-pooch” doesn’t have to be there forever.
After my two week experiment, without going grocery shopping, going out of town, holidays etc, I slowly added things into my diet- a bit of rice here, some jelly toast there, a sugar cookie or two or three, maybe four at my mom’s house- anyways- I FEEL LIKE CRAP!!!!
I need to go grocery shopping and get back to work, routine is my friend—
I cannot wait to go Paleo again-January 1st- who’s going with me?????????

Still considering. I have no idea what I would eat for lunch at work. Plus I don’t like seafood which is a huge part of the diet. I will admit though, I am inspired!
I think we’re gonna have some takers!
I will…I did it for a few weeks also and it is amazing how sugar slugs you down…so you count on me!!!!
I definitely want to try!
Day 1- Jan 4th- today is a good day- I feel inspired-

Rob and I are going to try this too..but I already broke down and had Sugar Free Hot Cocoa – it’s hard to cut this out/But I should have gone with Tea
I am trying it too…It will be a real challenge this week, because I will be traveling the entire week – so out to eat every lunch and dinner. If I have make it this week without cheating, then I should be able to make it any week! So far so good – but 7 more restaurants to go!
Thanks for your posts everyone! Each of us will have our own obstacles- I’m hearing it’s hard to give up coffee creamer for one person, cheese for another, and who can pass on (sugar free) hot cocoa on a cold day like today
Breakfast: 2 eggs, 2 pieces bacon, 1 grapefrt, coffee
snack: handful of nuts, tangerine, raw cabbage
(very busy today)
snack while cooking dinner: celery stix, 1/2 banana
dinner: cocktail shrimp, ground turkey w/ all natural HOT salsa
I subscribed to http://www.paleoplan.com. 9.99/month for a weekly shopping list, meal plan, and tons of recipes… it’s going to take all the hard work out of paleo for me (except that whole learning to cook part)
Their program goes Sunday-Saturday so this weekend will be my first big shopping trip and I’m starting fresh on Sunday!
Nice, Randi- I look forward to exploring that website.
Brkfst: 2 egg whites, 2 pieces bacon, 1 grpfrt, coffee

Lunch: Jennie-O ground beef, tuna packet
snack: kiwi
dinner: chicken breast in natural tomato sauce, ground turkey with all-
natural hot salsa
No need to continue posting my daily food intake-I was using that for personal accountability and a “kickoff” – sounds like everyone is doing well and feeling good. Looks like Karin may be joining in on Monday, after a calculated grocery shopping trip this weekend. Look forward to hearing more about how Randi’s paleoplan.com is working. Coach Lucas made some delicious paleo pancakes, even the kids wanted more! Be sure to ask about them.
I want the recipe for the pancakes!
my first paleo breakfast success… omelet muffins! http://twitpic.com/xjas6
Day one… Success!!! I brought so much food to work today, there was no way I was gonna cheat. Randi, those omelet muffins look delicious.
One day at a time!
Emergency phone calls from the grocery store…love it! Everyone is doing great- don’t be tempted, set yourself a “cheat day” once a week or every two weeks. Make it to that day. Then, do it again.
Randi, people want that omelette recipe- Karin made delicious paleo applesauce earlier this week, too. Keep it up and watch your wods take off!
I love that you are all so motivated about Paleo! I have been doing it since the 36 Day Paleo Challenge ended (with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas Day). I did Zone for nearly 10 months and didn’t half of the results I saw after 36 days of strict Paleo.
If you need a little inspiration, check out liveprimal.com. Great recipes in there! My favorite is the pecan encrusted pork chops. I also have a recipe for Mac Attacks. If you are familiar with Paleo Treats (paleotreats.com), you know they are delish! They are like a chocolate macaroon! I can post the recipe if people are interested. And for some sanity, remember, Tequila is Paleo!
Good luck Crossfit NKY! Happy eating!
One major thing I have noticed since I have been doing this is that I have not been getting headaches anymore. I used to get a headache at least once a day – not anymore.
Karin says she is amazed that she has NOT felt tired at work all week and Emily has NOT been getting headaches anymore- coincidence? Improve your diet, improve your health…..(improve your FRAN time)
It’s funny how this can become such a way of life. You’d think on a “cheat” day, one might gorge themself with pizza or donuts or something. A simple cheat for me turned out to be ketchup and string cheese (not together)
Personally, I can’t wait to eat some pizza on my cheat day!
I made some yummy banana pancakes tonight. They only took three ingredients: banana, egg and almond butter
Just like Jack Johnson- he makes Banana Pancakes!………..
The question came up today “Are pickles Paleo?” First of all, wanna know a secret? Coach Lucas used to work in a pickle factory, ask him about it!
Anyways- what I seem to be finding is that pickles most often show up on the “questionable” foods list. Foods on the questionable list often make their way into your paleo diet is small amounts unless you are GUNG-HO-HARD-CORE-NO-HOLDS-BARRED-Paleo.
Many paleo people say pickles are an easy snack. I did read though that because of the vinegar, they are a “no-no”
Regardless, pickles and cucumbers make for great snacks. As a substitute you might try raw pickling cucumbers and use them as travel snacks. They keep better, don’t smell, have no added salt, and they don’t need any prep to snack on.
On the pickles…they have High Fructose Corn Syrup in them and sometimes other additives that are not necessary. So I have steered away from them.
Stacy,
Good eye on the labels for the pickle controversy!
Grocery shopping and meals are starting to come a bit easier now….I have a question- with no dairy, where am I getting my calcium? I don’t want to start shrinking- my grandma was only 5′0 and when she passed (YEARS AGO) she was about 4′10- gotta protect our bones!
Major paleo set back this weekend on the Vegas trip. But it was easy to transition back to paleo and definitely no cheat days for me this week allowed.
I think veggies when it comes to calcium. Broccoli has as much calcium ounce per ounce as milk I also found this article…

Great article Stacy, thanks. As for you Emily- we’ll be keeping an eye on you…..no cheat days!
The Superbowl pizza “tasted” good but made me “feel” yuck. Throughout the week, when I have my routine, I do really well. It’s the weekend that leaves me in need of a Monday cleansing!
How’s everybody else doing with their eating?
I am a weekend cheater! I have been doing really well during the week although I am starting to get sick of eating the same things. What is everybody else eating for lunch? That one is the hardest for me since I have to pack and take to work.
